  • not necessary to determine all these positions at this meeting
  • guidelines for salary/payments for Music Ministers
  • guidelines for Ministers of Eucharist (revision) and Lectors (no extant guidelines)
  • look for a pastoral booklet for Ministers of the Eucharist which was prepared about 6 years ago
  • how do we help priests think about what they’re doing as presiders?

Guidelines for Music Ministers

  • pastors and music ministers want/need guidelines for payment/salaries
  • question of whether we can suggest contracts, or employment agreements
  • help parish staffs understand expectations of music minister:
    • how many special liturgies music minister might be expected to play?
    • who chooses repertoire?
    • how do multiple choirs serve the parish?
    • role of parish liturgy committee
    • role of pastor as final decision maker
    • cooperation of parishes/pastors in not “poaching” each other’s music ministries
    • needs of poor parishes who cannot afford/provide the kind of music program wealthier parishes can offer
    • interaction of pastor/musician/funeral director in setting stipends for music ministers;  what model protects music minister/parish/parishioners?
    • what is fair and just?  what can parishioners pay for funerals and weddings?
    • can guidelines attend to economic differences in parishes?
    • what can we learn from other Christian denominations?  what are their policies and practices?
    • need to be clear that these will be guidelines, not absolutes
    • emphasis on musician being a pastoral musician; this isn’t just a gig
    • survey the diocese?  survey two parishes in the 20 vicariates?  what’s happening there now?  we need to get a picture of what’s actually happening out there:  actual practice and actual fees (with attention to the background/training of the musicians involved)

Bill G will chair Music Subcommittee;  Andrea G has already volunteered; LCAB members asked to submit other names;  instruction to check with other dioceses in the Metropolitan to see if they have guidelines we might find helpful; subcommittee asked to establish working agreement statements to help parishes define roles and responsibilities; packaging all of this into guidelines for parish consumption; guidelines should include all parish music ministers:  director, organist, instrumentalists, cantors; relationship of ethnic or other special choirs to the parish program and how to integrate

Guidelines for Ministers of Eucharist
LCAB members asked to review 1991 document and be prepared to suggest revisions At next meeting

Guidelines for Lectors

  • how structure guidelines for lectors
  • LCAB asked think about what should the guidelines for lectors contain?  see materials Brian distributed at this meeting
  • keep in mind the multicultural realities and ramifications

5)  New Business

  • New workshop on Triduum recently held in Lexington and Milton; Brian directed; about 64 attendees between the two sites;  Brian expects to do this again, and to offer another style which would be more experiential
  • NPM National Office has asked Brian to host workshop co- sponsored by NPM and RCAB; Topic/focus to be decided/announced
  • Workshops continue to be self-supporting
  • Brian is working on finding others to be presenters for workshops;  he has all the materials for the curriculum for what needs to be covered; handouts are prepared; presenter need only show up and teach;  hope to begin in fall of 2006;  Brian is looking toward establishing new workshop topics;  need to address the question of spirituality which is foundation of ministries;  Brian is working on this already; Brian is also working on workshop for multicultural liturgies

6)      Next meeting:  March 6, 2006 at Creagh Library at 6:30 p.m.
