Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission

Minutes of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission

September 19, 2005

6-9 p.m.

Creagh Library, Brighton

Present:

Rev. Brian Bachand, Mr. Charles Carmody, Sr. Nancy Charlesworth, Ms. Nancy Dome, Rev. Austin Fleming, Deacon Mario Fonseca, Ms. Andrea Goodrich, Mr. William Grzybowski, Rev. Brian Mahoney, Mr. Victor Melo, Msgr. Timothy Moran, Ms. Amy Strickland

  1. The business meeting followed dinner.
  2. Discussion on issues and concerns the Commission might address included the following:
    • Rites of Christian initiation for children: what’s happening and what needs to happen?
    • Guidelines for bi/multi-lingual celebrations of the Triduum: possibly in place for Triduum 2006?
    • Significant changes in parish life/pastoral staffing and the tendency of parishioners to want/expect structures of the past: how manage people’s expectations and priest’s capacities with regard to weddings, funerals, daily masses, Sunday schedules? What guidelines might help take the heat off of the local pastor?
    • In developing policy recommendations, the Commission would submit its recommendations to the Archbishop.
    • Opportunities for developing/evaluating understanding of liturgical presidency
    • A general raising of excellence in liturgical life of parishes of the Archdiocese.
    • How might the Commission interact with other Archdiocesan agencies/ministries to engage in this effort?
    • Training for lay presiders who minister at wake services, committal rites; training parish ministers in leading prayer, in writing prayers
    • Evenings of instruction, guidelines for training parish ministers
    • Helping multi-cultural parishes blend traditions and customs without doing violence to the rites or the customs themselves
  3. Brian Mahoney spoke of the need to create Committees for the Commission: Executive; Liturgical Music; Art and Environment; RCIA; Liturgy and Sacraments. At the next meeting we need to name persons to chair the Committees and members of the Committees.
  4. Those interested in the FDLC listserve should email Brian Mahoney at ReverendBrian_Mahoney@rcab.org
  5. At the Commission’s next meeting we will elect officers: Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Secretary. To assist Commission members in electing officers, members are asked to submit a short biography to Brian at OfficeForWorship@RCAB.org within two weeks. Brian will send out terms of office so that we can elect accordingly.
  6. There was discussion about the members’ willingness to move the location of the meeting to other sites. Future meetings are planned for November, January, March, May.
  7. Other issues raised in discussion:
    • Difference in stipends/fees from parish to parish: how to standardize?
    • Need to update Archdiocesan guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
    • Need for Archdiocesan guidelines for lectors: none in existence at the moment
    • Need to clarify giving Communion to those in hospital settings (esp. the question of non-Catholics (Brian may seek permission to reprint a relevant article in the current issue of Worship)
    • Booklets for guidelines on weddings and funerals (to hand out to wedding couples and families)
    • Need for workshops for Ext. Mins. Of Eucharist; liturgical music; Triduum; lectors; weddings; foundations of liturgical ministries. Possibility of taping these so that they could be used more frequently
