April 30, 2008 - Statement from the Archdiocese regarding Fr. Jerome F. Gillespie

In 2005, Fr. Jerome F. Gillespie resigned his position as pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott pending a criminal investigation into inappropriate remarks he made while intoxicated at a Chelsea restaurant. The criminal investigation concluded with Fr. Gillespie admitting to sufficient facts relating to two charges of accosting and annoying a person of the opposite sex.

Following a two-year probationary period and extensive testing and evaluation, the charges against Fr. Gillespie were dismissed. At this time, Fr. Gillespie has satisfied all obligations to the court and has been determined fit to return to ministry. Fr. Gillespie is currently assisting parishes on an interim basis. It is expected that he soon will receive a formal assignment within the Archdiocese of Boston.”
