May 30, 2007 - The PILOT Garners Six 2007 Catholic Press Association Awards

TWO FIRST PLACE FINISHES INCLUDING best Web site

Brighton, MA - The Pilot, the official newspaper for the Archdiocese of Boston, was presented with six awards at the 2007 awards ceremony of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada in Brooklyn, New York last Friday. Among the six awards was a first place finish for Best Web Site, www.thebostonpilot.com in the newspaper category and a tie for first place in Individual Excellence in the Combined Category. In all, The Pilot earned two first place, two-second place and two honorable mention awards.

Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley said, "We congratulate The Pilot in being recognized by the Catholic Press Association for its outstanding work. The Pilot's staff is a strong team of committed individuals who help us to spread the Good News to Catholics across the Archdiocese. We are proud of their achievements and look forward each week to reading about our parishes, clergy, schools and the Catholic news that impacts all of us as Disciples of Christ."

"These awards represent our strongest showing in many years and recognize the achievements of an immensely talented and dedicated team at The Pilot," said Antonio Enrique, Editor of The Pilot. "Our responsibility is to provide the Catholic perspective on current events and to assist the Cardinal and our clergy in ministering to Catholics across Eastern Massachusetts. We provide this work and this effort out of a love for the Church and in helping Catholics to better understand their local Church and their faith."

  2. Second Place: Best General News Photo: (September 8, 2006, "Final Farewell" by Gregory L. Tracy).
  3. Honorable Mention: Best Editorial on a National or International Issue, Circulation-17,001-40,000 (May 12, 2006, "Hiding Behind the Veil").
  4. Honorable Mention: General Excellence, Circulation: 17,001-40,000.

Combined Category (Magazines, Newspapers, Newsletters, Spanish language publications)

  1. First Place Tie: Individual Excellence-Advertising/Business/Marketing/Professional (Joan McAllister, Advertising Manager).
  2. Second Place: Most Effective Single Piece of Circulation Promotion (November 10, 2006, "Christmas Promotion").

In commenting on Joan McAllister, Advertising Manager for The Pilot, Mr. Enrique said, "Joan has given thirty-five years of service to the Archdiocese of Boston. I can think of no one more fitting for recognition for their accomplishments than Joan. She leads by example and we are blessed by her commitment to the Church and The Pilot."

The Archdiocese of Boston

The Archdiocese of Boston was founded on April 8, 1808 and was elevated to Archdiocese in 1875.
