January 10, 2006 - Archdiocese of Boston To Begin Search For New ChancellorBRIGHTON, MA - Archbishop Seán O'Malley today announced that he has convened a search committee to seek a replacement for the current Chancellor, David W. Smith, who is retiring in July 2006. He has been with the Archdiocese since June of 1991 and has served in his current position since July 1, 2001. At Archbishop O'Malley's request, Neal Finnegan, Director of Citizens Financial Capital, Inc., will chair the committee, which will be made up of local leadership in finance and communications, members of the Archdiocesan Finance Council, and clergy from the Archbishop's administrative cabinet and parish leadership. "The new Chancellor will play an integral role in strategic development plans for the Archdiocese" said Archbishop O'Malley. He continued, "The Chancellor's input will be critical to achieving the financial recovery that is a necessary element of strengthening the work of the Church and having the resources to carry out our mission." The Archbishop added, "David Smith has served the Archdiocese with distinction during difficult and challenging times. I wish to personally express my gratitude for his commitment to the good of the Church and his unwavering dedication to our faith. " It is expected that a new Chancellor will transition into the office prior to the departure of Mr. Smith in early July 2006. The search committee will begin its work immediately. Mr. Smith is the fourth lay Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Boston. The role of Chancellor varies in dioceses throughout the United States; in the Archdiocese of Boston the Chancellor serves as the Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Clerk of the Corporation Sole. The Chancellor is generally responsible for the financial management of the Archdiocese including budget, financial reporting, cash management, investments, risk management, MIS, benefits, human resources, cemeteries, real estate and facilities. |
