May 25, 2005 - Archdiocese of Boston to Market 3 Additional Parish Properties

(Boston, Massachusetts)  May 25, 2005…The Archdiocese of Boston announced it will begin soliciting offers for the sale of the former Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence, Our Lady of the Rosary in Stoughton, and St. Alphonsus in Beverly. The properties will be marketed for a minimum of 90 days.

The Archdiocesan Real Estate office and the Real Estate Advisory committee will review offers received.  They will make their recommendations to the Chancellor, who will then review the financial terms.  The Chancellor will forward his recommendations to the Vicar General, who in turn will review the recommendations in light of other considerations, including social concerns.  The Vicar General will then forward his recommendations to the Archbishop concerning the received offers.  If the Archbishop is inclined to accept the offers, the required permissions will be sought from the College of Consultors, the Finance Council and, where needed, from the Holy See.

The Chancellor will report on these expenditures in The Pilot.

Due to declining numbers of clergy, changing Catholic demographics and financial pressure, the Archdiocese of Boston began the process of parish reconfiguration in January of 2004. Through this process, the Archdiocese is seeking to serve the needs of area Catholics by building parish communities with resources to match needs. To date, 63 parishes have closed or merged as part of the reconfiguration process.
