May 20, 2005 - Archdiocese of Boston Settles Insurance Claims with St. Paul Travelers(Boston, Massachusetts) May 20, 2005 ... The Archdiocese of Boston today announced that it has reached a settlement with one of its insurance carriers, St. Paul Travelers. St. Paul Travelers insured the Archdiocese for a period during the 1980s. Pursuant to the settlement, the Archdiocese has received $8.5 million with respect to previously settled claims, including those settled as part of the global settlement of 541 sexual abuse claims in late 2003. St. Paul Travelers also waived certain premiums the Archdiocese otherwise would have owed. Negotiations between the Archdiocese and St. Paul Travelers began in 2004, shortly after the conclusion of the global settlement. As previously announced, in March 2005 the Archdiocese settled its case against another insurance carrier, Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company. The Archdiocese received $20 million as a result of that settlement. With the conclusion of settlements with St. Paul Travelers and Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company, the Archdiocese now has resolved with its principal insurance carriers the insurance issues with respect to all previously settled claims. " With these matters resolved, the Archdiocese hopes that it will soon be in a position to begin discussions with plaintiffs' counsel about how to resolve pending cases, " stated Rev. John Connolly, Special Assistant to the Archbishop. |
