January 9, 2005 - Statement of the Archdiocese of Boston Regarding
the Closing of
Immaculate Conception Parish in Cambridge
(Boston, Massachusetts) January 9, 2005…The Archdiocese of Boston
today announced that Immaculate Conception Parish in Cambridge celebrated
its closing liturgy peacefully and prayerfully. The parish was originally
slated to close in December 26, but was granted an extension through
January 9, 2005, at the request of Rev. Alexander J. Keenan, Pastor of
Immaculate Conception.
“We are thankful for the extension Archbishop O’Malley
granted us so that our parish community could welcome in the New Year
at Immaculate
Conception,” stated Father Keenan. “Many in our parish have
already made the transition to Immaculate Conception’s welcoming
parishes; St. John the Evangelist in North Cambridge, St. Agnes in Arlington
and St. Clement in Somerville, and look forward to developing relationships
with new friends and neighbors. Additionally, the Haitian community that
was welcomed to Immaculate Conception in October of 2003 will be moving
to St. John the Evangelist in North Cambridge with their chaplain, Rev.
George Roy, O.M.I. and continuing the Haitian ministry from St. John’s.” Fr.
Keenan continued, “I am most grateful to Rev. Paul Cornell for
his assistance with the transition process and his service as Administrator
at Immaculate Conception in recent months.”
