November 17, 2002 - Statement of Donna M. Morrissey, Spokeswoman, Archdiocese
of Boston
Earlier today reports in the media reflected that a decision had been
made to institute formal legal action against certain insurance carriers
of the Archdiocese of Boston. These reports were totally inaccurate.
The Archdiocese of Boston, in looking to bring about a fair and equitable
resolution to these cases for the victims of sexual abuse by members of
the clergy, is looking to insurance carriers of the Archdiocese for substantial
contribution. However, there has been no decision made to institute any
formal action. In fact, the Archdiocese continues to work with its carriers
at this time in its efforts to bring about a just resolution to these
matters. Should any decision be made to institute such a formal legal
action, as was reported in the media, it will be coordinated and announced
by Archdiocesan Counsel, Wilson D. Rogers Jr. A just, equitable and expeditious
resolution of all cases has been and remains our goal.
