Statement of His Eminence Bernard Cardinal Law, Archbishop of Boston

As shocking and terrible as is the news of these indictments against
Father Paul Shanley, all of us owe a debt of profound gratitude to abused
persons who bring such acts into the light. I have asked Barbara Thorp,
Director of the Office of Healing and Assistance, to be in contact with
Our Lady Help of Christian Parish in Newton to extend the care and support
of the Archdiocese of Boston.
These latest revelations will undoubtedly open up the deep and painful
wounds of those who have been abused in the past. My prayers are with
all of those who have lived in the shadows of such sinful and criminal
acts. May this be a significant moment in the process of healing.
My sorrow is compounded whenever such acts involve the betrayal of trust
by a priest. For this I apologize from the bottom of my heart.
