September 23, 2003 - Response to the Boston Herald article of 9/22/03, p. 26, "Questions on therapy arise in sex abuse settlement."Contrary to what is stated in the article, the settlement agreement clearly states that people who settle with the Archdiocese will continue to have access to psychological therapy and treatment payed for by the Archdiocese. The manner in which treatment will be provided is to be found on this website under the heading of Statement of Archdiocesan Policy on payment of treatment for surviviors of clergy sexual abuse. This program will not be replaced by the offer of spiritual counseling or spiritual direction to survivors that is also cited as part of the settlement. This is a program that was requested by the plaintiffs' lawyers as part of the conditions for a settlement and was agreed to by the Archdiocese as completely separate onto itself. |
