August 29, 2003 - Response to Margery Egan’s Boston
Herald column of Aug. 26, 2003
In her column of Aug. 26, 2003 in the Boston Herald, Margery Egan somehow
manages to blame the Church for the death of John Geoghan in prison.
She goes so far as to quote Lori Lambert’s outrageous statement
that his “blood is on the hands of Cardinal Medeiros and Cardinal
Law.” For the record, it was not either one of these men who strangled,
beat, and stomped John Geoghan to death. It was not Cardinal Law or Cardinal
Medeiros who sent him to the maximum security prison for a single count
conviction and then failed to protect him while he was in prison. Yet,
to follow Ms. Egan’s twisted logic, it was their failure to report
his crimes to the authorities that somehow caused John Geoghan’s
death. This is patently ridiculous. The Church has a lot to atone for
in this whole scandal of child abuse and there is a lot of blame to go
around for what happened. In the end, John Geoghan’s tragic death
was an “act of anger and hatred and inhumanity.” Ms. Egan’s
moralizing about who is to blame for his death rings hollow at best and
false at worse.
