July 11, 2003 - Response to the Boston Herald article p.2 of July 11, 2003, “Cross Exam” The lead paragraph of the article creates the misconception that lawyers for the Archdiocese of Boston and the other defendants are at the moment ready and avid to “launch an aggressive defense in the [Fr. Shanley] case at the center of the sexual abuse crisis,” quote: they are “poised” to do so. This is a clear situation of a paper creating a story when in fact there is none. Our lawyers are not “poised.” They are, in fact, participating in a voluntary stand-down as regards any legal tactic in these matters. As a matter of fact, defendant’s lawyers just recently agreed not to depose a therapist of one of the plaintiffs in this case. None of what is reported in this Herald story is new. To publish the
story now, in the manner in which it was written, is a disservice to all
parties in this matter. |
