May 26, 2003 - Letter To the Editor of the Boston Globe on Michael Paulson's
front-page article of Sunday 5/25/03, “Church insiders now on outside”
Michael Paulson's front-page article of Sunday 5/25/03, “Church
insiders now on outside,” contains mixed news for the Catholic
Church and the Archdiocese of Boston. The good news is that the article
clearly shows Bishop Lennon shows no favoritism to anyone in the Archdiocese
simply because of personal wealth or prior relationships. He values everyone's
opinion, as evidenced by the numerous times he has visited parishes in
the Archdiocese to celebrate Mass, his discussions and meetings with
fellow Catholics after these Masses, and his many meetings every week
with people who through normal channels have personally requested some
time with him. Many of these people are the leaders within their own
communities who get a lot of "things done" without any media
attention.
The sad news is that manufactured, non-news stories like Mr. Paulson's
give the impression that Bishop Lennon is not consulting with the laity,
when in fact he is, and have the potential to hurt the fundraising efforts
of the Archdiocese. The Church does very much need to raise the funds
that are required to carry out its mission - especially to the poor and
the needy - and continues to welcome individual and corporate donations
toward that mission.
Fr. Christopher Coyne
Spokesman, Archdiocese of Boston
