Comments on May 15, 2003 Boston Globe Article -Priest who spoke against Law resignsOn Thursday, May 15, 2003 the Boston Globe, published a story entitled, “Priest who spoke against Law resigns” on page B1. The story title was repeated inside the B section of the paper. On Thursday, May 14, Fr. Christopher Coyne, spokesman for the Archdiocese, was specifically asked by the reporter from the Globe if the fact that Msgr. Groden signed the petition calling for Cardinal Law’s resignation had anything to do with Msgr. Groden’s resignation. As stated in the story, Fr. Coyne responded “no.” In the course of the conversation, Fr. Coyne further pointed out that there has not been, nor will there be any action against any of the signees. In fact, Fr. Coyne told the reporter that at least two of the signees have recently been reassigned as pastors and even supplied their names and parishes to the reporter. The fact that Msgr. Groden signed the petition had nothing to do with his resigning from his ministries, in spite of the suspicions of certain parishioners. The facts just do not bear it out. For the Globe to headline its story implying a connection between the petition and Msgr. Groden’s resignations is misleading and unfortunate. Fr. Christopher Coyne |
