Some recommended resources on Islam and Interreligious Dialogue

A collection of Vatican and Papal statements on Islam can be found online at http://www.usccb.org/seia/textsislam.shtml

Resources from the USCCB web site: http://www.usccb.org/seia/islam.shtml

Collection of statements and documents: Interreligious Dialogue: The Official Teaching of the Catholic Church (1963 – 1995), issued by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, Pauline Books and Media, Boston, 1997 (N.B.- This collection does not contain statements on the Church’s dialogue with Judaism.)

Meeting Other Believers: The Risks and Rewards of Interreligious Dialogue, Francis Cardinal Arinze, Our Sunday Visitor Publishing, Huntington, IN, 1997.  A “must read” for those who wish to engage in interreligious dialogue, this book is a very helpful resource from the former Cardinal President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Building Bridges: Interreligious Dialogue on the Path to World Peace. An interview with Cardinal Francis Arinze. New City Press, New York, 2004. A “must read” for those who wish to engage in interreligious dialogue, this book is a very helpful resource from the former Cardinal President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Islam: The Straight Path (Updated with New Epilogue) by John Esposito. (Oxford University Press, USA, 3rd revised edition, December 30, 2004). A fine introduction by a Catholic scholar who is respected by Muslims for his treatment of Islam.

Catholic Evangelization in an Ecumenical and Interreligious Society
(Secretariat for Evangelization, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) http://www.usccbpublishing.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=478
As Christians we are called to evangelize the world around us. However, Vatican II made it clear that we are also called to be people of dialogue, especially with people of other faiths. In a society that is ever more diverse, how can we properly dialogue with non-Roman Catholic people of faith, yet remain faithful to our mission to evangelize? The presentations offered in this book give helpful insights to this timely question.

Interfaith Dialogue: A Catholic View
by Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald and Dr. John Borelli, Orbis Books, 2006.
"Written by two of the Church's longest-serving and best informed experts, this important book offers fresh insights into developments in interreligious dialogue between world religions and the Catholic Church. Here readers can see clearly how dialogue has been central to the Church's attempt to improve understanding and interchange among the world's religious traditions, particularly during the long pontificate of John Paul II. The authors not only provide informative, reliable accounts of interfaith encounters but reflect on what has been learned in the process, and point out where relations among the world's great religious ways and practitioners have improved. They also allow the reader to see where interreligious interchange has met problems, pointing to issues that urgently require attention." (From the book cover.)

Prayers of Petition for the Church concerning interreligious relations during the anniversary year of Nostra Aetate.
These Prayers of Petition were adapted from various official texts for use during the Archdiocese of Boston's observance of the 40th anniversary of the Vatican II "Declaration on the Church's Relation to Non-Christian Religions" (Nostra Aetate).
