October 3, 2005 - The 40th anniversary of the Vatican II “Declaration on the Church’s Relation to Non-Christian Religions” (often referred to by its Latin title, Nostra Aetate) will be observed on October 28, 2005. This brief document was a revolution in Catholic thought with regard to other religions. Along with the Vatican II “Decree on Ecumenism,” Nostra Aetate offered the theological vision and practical impetus for the Church to reach out to other believers. Over the years, the Archdiocese of Boston has continued to develop and maintain ecumenical and interreligious relations through ongoing religious dialogue and collaboration on numerous issues, especially those affecting the good of our society. Unarguably, one of the greatest legacies of the pontificate of Pope John Paul II was his commitment to interreligious dialogue and cooperation. Throughout the next year, in the spirit of Pope John Paul’s example, the Archdiocesan Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs will be sponsoring a number of initiatives in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Nostra Aetate.
